I am the descendant of Irish potato farmers who immigrated to North America in the 19th century and eventually settled in the northeast corner of the United States, where I was born and raised. I have always enjoyed the international experience, spending part of my growing up years in Australia, where my parents lived for 20 years. Before moving to China I worked in social work and alternative education in the city of Philadelphia, where I met and married my wife. We now have a growing family and enjoy living and working in China. In my spare time, I love reading, sports, and spending time with my wife and kids. I feel privileged to be an educator and consider it a joy to work with the incredible students and staff that we have at Chengdu International School.

I was born in the heartland of America, just outside of Chicago, and haven’t been back since graduating high school.  I’ve lived all across the U.S. and now in China, collecting stories for my journals and blog along the way.  I am extremely fortunate to be here at CDIS and to be a part of so many lives with the opportunity to learn from so many different stories. I started teaching at CDIS in 2012 as a high school English teacher, then in 2015-2016, I was the Athletics Director. Now in 2016-2017, I have the honor of serving as High School Principal and continuing as the High School Basketball coach. I have three kids in Elementary school and a lovely wife who inspires me.

From an early age, I imagined being an educator and working with both students and adults in molding the future for tomorrow.  Born and raised in Georgia in the United States, I grew up with a family that instilled a desire and passion to serve others.  For part of my college years, I lived in Davao City, Philippines, where I got my taste for travel and experiencing the world through service.  I have a wonderful husband, Jeff, and two wonderful children, Jillian and Jonah.  I love spending my spare time with my family, exploring new destinations and learning about the world around us.  My passion as an educator is helping others, both young and seasoned, to grow and learn and expand their thinking each and every day.  I can’t wait to see this passion grow with others at Chengdu International School!

I must have been born not to put down my roots in any one place because I have lived in 23 different homes so far, and counting! I was born in Seoul, Korea, and grew up there with four sisters until the mid 70’s, when our parents decided to emigrate to America. Having lived in many places in the States, I’m what you might call a “měiguótōng” (美国通). I have lived in various parts of America: Chicago, Atlanta, Los Angeles, and Texas; as well as having visited 39 out of the 50 states.

Beginning as a clerk at Marshall’s Department Store during my junior year in high school and continuing over the following 30 years, I have gained professional experience working as a financial and operational auditor, finance and I.T. director, and financial controller in various retail, corporate, and manufacturing corporations.

Since moving to China in 2007, I studied Chinese language for four years at two different universities. I also operated an SAT academy and developed curriculum for and taught SAT classes for two years prior to joining CDIS in its Information Technology Department. I look forward to utilizing my 30+ years of finance experience and passion for information technology to support the endeavors of CDIS.

My wife and I have been married for over 20 years and have one daughter, two sons, and one dog. My passions include music (7,000 album records & CD collection), movies, sports (American football, baseball, tennis, bowling, para-gliding, etc.), automobiles, electronic gadgets, memorizing various statistical information, etc.

I returned back to Taiwan as an adult to make my fame and fortune as a scuba diving instructor but instead met my wife and moved back to the States. We have two children who are now on their own. Over the years, God took all my passions for health and safety and formed my interests to become an Environmental Health and Safety Director for the 20 plus years. The only gift that was not being used in the States was the ability to speak Chinese. Now God has fulfilled that working in China. I love being back in the Chinese culture and more importantly…the food

I am a very enthusiastic teacher, having started teaching kindergarten in 2014. I have taught most of the grades between second and seventh grades; serving as Elementary teacher and Science teacher. I have been teaching for over ten years.

I have found Kindergarten to be the grade with the most wonder and magic, as it is a child’s unique first year in school. Adventure, exploration, discovery, and creativity are experiences I intend to provide to my kindergarten students, so as to inspire a lifelong love of learning! My philosophy is to provide an interesting and challenging learning environment where my students will flourish socially and academically.  I love to incorporate acting, art, and music in my Chinese curriculum. All the Kindergarteners will have a wonderful time I’m sure, discovering talents and a new confidence that comes from learning, making new friends, and developing the great potential each child has within.

I spent my childhood in Kingsland, Georgia and my teenage years in Centerville, Indiana. I attended public schools in both locations. I graduated from Cedarville University with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education with a Choral emphasis. I spent one year (2013-2014) in the United Arab Emirates teaching general music (k-12) at an international school. I am the youngest of four children. I absolutely love teaching and getting to know my students. In my free time I like to karaoke and dance.

I was born and raised in Sichuan. When I was a child, I spent some time in Guangzhou, where my parents had some business. I enjoyed my childhood with my parents and younger brother. I have liked sports a lot since I was a child, and I was a long-distance runner for years. I started serving CDIS since my graduation in 2004. I think I am blessed to be part of this big family where I fully enjoy my job and life in this international atmosphere. Teaching TCKs and getting to know them is interesting. I can’t stop falling in love with this occupation! In my spare time, I like cooking, playing sports, traveling and spending time with family and friends. I truly view education as my joy, hope and life goal and am eager to learn more.

BA in Spanish + BA in Intercultural Studies with a Concentration in TESOL from Houghton College

I was born in Taiwan into a family with a bit of a penchant for traveling and living all over the world. Little did I know that I would one day carry on the family tradition myself! After a few years in Taiwan, we moved back to the beautiful horse-and-buggy-filled farmlands of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA, where I spent the majority of my growing up years. As I was heading off to college in the USA, the rest of my family moved to Chengdu. My parents both worked here at CDIS, and my twin brothers both graduated from here as well. I feel blessed to now be living and working here myself. I love linguistics and thoroughly enjoy helping those who are bravely taking on the daunting task of learning the English language. I am encouraged by working with young ESL students and love watching their language ability improve so quickly thanks to their young, malleable minds.

Sarah Leichty

IEC Teacher

BA in English Education from Grace College, TESOL certificate from Grace College

My name is Sarah Leichty, and I get to see the beautiful faces of CDIS’ IEC students every day. When I look back on how my nine-year-old self would line up my brothers and sisters to play “English class,” my current position at CDIS is no wonder to me. Language and literature are some of the best things in the world, in my opinion. I spent most of my childhood in rural Indiana. At the age of 12, however, I moved with my family to Chengdu, China, for nine months. After completing my Bachelor of Arts degree in English Education and TESOL in the United States, I decided to return to this wonderful land of pandas and rivers. Teaching is my calling and passion, and I am so happy to get to spend every day with the staff and students of CDIS.

I must have been born not to put down my roots in any one place because I have lived in 23 different homes so far, and counting! I was born in Seoul, Korea and grew up there with four sisters until the mid 70’s, when our parents decided to immigrate to America. Having lived in many places in the States, I’m what you might call an “měiguótōng” (美国通). I have lived in various parts of America: Chicago, Atlanta, Los Angeles, and Texas; as well as having visited 39 out of the 50 states.

Beginning as a clerk at Marshalls Department Store during my junior year in high school and continuing over the following 30 years, I have gained professional experience working as a financial & operational auditor, finance & I.T. director, and financial controller in various retail, corporate, and manufacturing corporations.

Since moving to China in 2007, I studied Chinese language for 4 years at two different universities. I also operated an S.A.T. academy as well as developing curriculum and teaching SAT classes for 2 years prior to joining CDIS in its Information Technology Department. I look forward to utilizing my passion for information technology to provide meaningful and useful information to the CDIS teachers and staff.

My wife and I have been married for over 20 years and have one daughter, one son, and one dog. My passions include music (7,000 album records & CD collection), movies, sports (American football, baseball, tennis, bowling, para-gliding, etc.), automobiles, electronic gadgets, memorizing various statistical information, etc.
