Fine Arts: Culture of Creative Expression
June 05, 2025
At CDIS, we highlight the significance of fine arts within our holistic learning program. The arts offer students opportunities to excel in areas where they may face challenges in other subjects. Fine arts emphasize hands-on activities that engage various parts of the brain, sparking imagination and benefiting learners of all ages and backgrounds. Creative expression, whether through music or art, nurtures skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and emotional intelligence, making fine arts an integral part of education.
Music strengthens cognitive abilities
Participation in fine arts not only enhances creativity but also positively impacts performance in academic courses. The hands-on approach enables students to learn by doing, creating an environment where there is language without the need for words. Music is especially beneficial for English Language Learner (ELL) students who may find adjusting to an all-English-speaking school challenging. Art and music provide them with an opportunity to succeed and are not measured by how many English words they know or don't know.
I have been at CDIS for 10 years. Support from the administration for the fine arts department has been a foundational reason why I've been here all these years. Many schools in the states don't receive the support or resources needed to thrive. But when I came to CDIS, the administration was very supportive. Even when we moved school locations, the leadership involved me in choosing and setting up my classroom and discussed what should be included in the music room. CDIS provides well for its teachers, and my co-workers help me feel connected to this community. Plus, I love the culture of China and plan to continue living here! —Miss Hoekman
My time at CDIS began before I became the Choir Director. I finished my student teaching here while I was still in college, and since then, I've been at CDIS for over 11 years. I appreciated that the music program was well–established even before I came on staff, as the previous choir director built up a strong choir culture. I feel our school has continually supported our students and emphasized the importance of music in education. Also, as a side note, I have loved living in Chengdu and building relationships with the students over the years. —Miss Tucker
The art program emphasizes the importance of dedicating time to creating art and developing each student's unique aesthetic voice rather than focusing solely on executing techniques. Exploring and having the freedom to create is essential for understanding the significance of these techniques. My hope is that students will strengthen their artistic voices through the artworks they express.
Aesthetics is the foundation of everything. It serves as the lens and language through which students engage with the world. It shaped how they see, respond, and present themselves. Aesthetics influences not just what students create but how they exist, much like a name. When people recognize your aesthetic, they recognize you. That's why you sometimes hear someone say, "This is so [your name]!" That's your voice. That's your attitude. That's your presence. -Miss Yu
Fine Arts Festival
High school students can attend the Annual LifePlus Fine Arts Festival in Tianjin, China. Fine Arts students from our four other sister schools gather this weekend to celebrate the arts! The music students learn from guest conductors worldwide, while art students learn new painting techniques and visit the local art museums around the city.
Concerts and Art Showcases
This month, we have wrapped up the year with our Spring concerts. Every semester, all choir, band and art students from ECC to high school come together to showcase their performances and artwork. Various 2D and 3D art projects were designed, created, and displayed electronically and around the school.
Tomorrow is the opening of the annual CISA Art Exhibition. Come and see the remarkable works created by our students, as well as those from other international schools in Chengdu.
A huge thank you to our Fine Arts teachers! Your passion for your craft and dedication to the students. We appreciate everything you do to nurture creativity and growth!
